How to Clean Your Phone Without Damaging It
A few gentle habits can clear fingerprints and dust while protecting the screen finish, case and openings. The safest cleaner depends on your specific phone and its materials.

A gentle default routine
For everyday smudges, a dry microfiber cloth is usually a reasonable first step. If a manufacturer allows a slightly damp cloth for stubborn marks, dampen the cloth rather than spraying or pouring liquid onto the phone. Apple, Samsung and Google each warn users to keep moisture away from openings and to use soft, non-abrasive cloths.
Do not assume every phone takes the same disinfectant
Cleaning and disinfecting instructions vary by model, surface and accessory. Apple permits certain wipes on specified hard, nonporous surfaces but warns against some chemicals and moisture in openings. Samsung’s phone instructions cover glass, ceramic and metal surfaces and note that plastic, rubber or leather accessories may be damaged. Google provides separate directions for Pixel phones. Check the support page for your exact model before using any disinfectant, screen cleaner or soap.
Do not use a household glass cleaner, bleach, abrasive scrubber, compressed air or a spray directly on the device unless the maker explicitly says it is suitable. Repeated hard rubbing can also wear some surface coatings.
Clean the case separately
Remove the phone from its case first so you can wipe dust from both surfaces. Case materials vary: silicone, fabric, plastic, rubber and leather can have different care requirements. Follow the case maker’s instructions, and let the case dry fully before putting the phone back inside. If a case uses a leather or fabric finish, avoid assuming that an alcohol wipe is safe for it.
A quick pre-clean checklist
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model and any special display material.
- Power off, unplug and remove the case.
- Start with a clean, soft microfiber cloth; use gentle pressure.
- Keep liquids out of openings and never submerge the phone.
- Use disinfectant only if the manufacturer allows that product on those surfaces.
- Clean the case according to its material and dry it before reinstalling.
If liquid has entered the phone, stop cleaning and follow the manufacturer’s liquid-exposure or service guidance. For more device upkeep, see WSDK’s phone battery care guide and home Wi-Fi security checklist.
